Jalousie Chlorinator Causes Diarrhea Cases to Drop
The director of the Jalousie local health clinic reported a noticeable drop in chronic diarrhea cases in the two months after an IA Clean Water Campaign installed a LF 1500 Chlorinator in May 2006, and proposed a joint study to document the impact of the new chlorinator.
The chlorinator has maintained levels of 2.0 ppm Cl in the hillside community of Jalousie.
The Jalousie system includes two tanks feeding six water stations. Each station serves several thousand people each. An estimated 50,000 people drink the chlorinated water. The local water board - which manages the system - reported they are using 4 chlorine tablets a week to purify their water. This will cost $500 for 200 tablets annually, or 1 cent per person.
Jalousie is a large slum area in the hills above Port-au-Prince.
